Elkton Oregon AVA wineries and tasting rooms
Elkton Oregon became its own AVA in 2013, carved out of the northern end of the Umpqua Valley where the river corridor does something the rest of the valley doesn't: channel Pacific marine air inland on summer afternoons, dropping night temperatures and keeping the AVA from hitting 90°F even at the height of summer. It gets roughly 50 inches of rain a year, nearly double what falls thirty miles south in Roseburg.
Vineyard owner Michael Landt petitioned for the AVA on behalf of himself and seven other local growers, with climatologist Greg Jones, the same researcher behind the Southern Oregon AVA petition, providing the underlying climate mapping. The mixed sedimentary, volcanic, and metamorphic soils here favor the same cool-climate whites the fog itself points toward: Pinot Noir, Pinot Gris, Gewürztraminer, Riesling.
At under 75,000 acres and entirely nested inside both Umpqua Valley and Southern Oregon, in what's mapped here as the Umpqua Valley region, Elkton is a small, specific correction to the idea that all of southern Oregon runs hot: proof that a river canyon and enough marine fog can build a genuinely cool-climate pocket this far south.
