Syrah wineries and tasting rooms in Oregon
Syrah's history in the Rogue Valley is a story about getting it wrong before getting it right. Quady North's Herb Quady told Decanter the grape "had a false start in the Rogue Valley," planted early on in sites that couldn't really support it.
It's since found two distinct homes. On the valley's warmest sites, Syrah ripens into fruity wines with notes of olive and iron. In the cooler, higher Applegate Valley nearby, the same grape turns more earthy: tart red fruit, dried herbs, olive, leaner and more savory than Syrah from warmer regions like California's Sierra Foothills.
Quady calls it a grape that's now "in the right place at the right time," and Decanter's Southern Oregon profile singled out his single-vineyard bottlings as evidence of that.
It's a grape that took a couple of decades to find its footing here. Taste a Rogue Valley bottling against an Applegate one below to hear the difference a few miles and a few hundred feet of elevation make.
