Eola Amity Hills AVA wineries and tasting rooms
The name comes from a place that no longer exists. Eola was a river village incorporated by Oregon's territorial legislature on January 17, 1856, and named for Aeolus, the Greek god of wind: a fitting choice for hills that turned out to be defined by exactly that. Every summer afternoon, Pacific air pours through a gap in the Coast Range and slams into these east-facing slopes, dropping temperatures fast enough that Evesham Wood's Erin Nuccio says the AVA takes the worst of it: "we kind of get the brunt of it and get the biggest influence," he told a 2026 oral history of the AVA.
That wind is also why two Salem winemakers, Russell Raney and Bethel Heights's Ted Casteel, petitioned to formalize the ground in 2002. "Nobody had ever heard of the Willamette Valley at that point," Bethel Heights co-founder Pat Dudley remembers of the era in the same oral history. The AVA became official in 2006, its boundary drawn around basalt soils that the federal petition itself describes as shallower and lower in water capacity than the Jory clay up in the Dundee Hills to the north, a difference growers can taste before they can explain it.
West across the border sits the Van Duzer Corridor, its own AVA since 2019, carved from the valley floor for the handful of sites that catch the same Pacific wind at its most extreme, a neighbor, not a subdivision of Eola-Amity Hills, though the two share a fence line and a weather system. What was 12 wineries and roughly 1,200 planted acres at the time of the 2002 petition has grown to more than 30 wineries and nearly 2,900 acres today. "Eola-Amity Hills has quickly become one of the world's top wine regions," Björnson Vineyards' Mark Björnson said in 2026, noting that three of Oregon's six wines on Wine Spectator's 2024 Top 100 list came from this one stretch of ridge.
That's a lot of wind to hide behind for one range of hills in the Willamette Valley. The wineries below all farm some piece of it. Ask each one how they manage a vineyard that gets hit by the same gale every August afternoon.
