Red Blend wineries and tasting rooms in Oregon
Oregon's red blends live almost entirely in the state's warmer southern AVAs, especially the Rogue and Applegate Valleys, where enough heat and elevation exist to ripen Bordeaux grapes like Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot alongside Rhône varieties like Syrah.
Oregon has enforced the strictest wine labeling rules in the country since 1977: most varietal bottlings must contain at least 90% of the named grape, versus 75% under federal rules elsewhere. Blending is how southern producers bring multiple varieties into one wine without hitting that threshold, and it's become a defining style of the region, where red grapes are produced at nearly twice the volume of white.
Paul O'Brien Winery's 2018 GSM (Grenache, Syrah, Mourvèdre) was one of Decanter's 10 Southern Oregon wines to try.
