Oregon Coast wineries and tasting rooms
Richard Cutler opened Flying Dutchman Winery in Otter Rock in 1997, inside the restaurant of the Inn at Otter Crest, and built the whole operation around a fact most coastal wineries would rather not put on their own website: "wine grapes will not mature along Oregon's coast." He said it plainly, and then built a winery anyway: trucking fruit in from Applegate Valley, Rogue Valley, and the Umpqua River corridor since the early 2000s, and leaning into what the coast does offer, salt air and cool temperatures that stretch out cold-soak and fermentation times well past what inland wineries use.
Cutler's first Pinot Noir won a medal at the 1999 Oregon State Fair, proof the approach could produce something real even without a single coastal vine. Farther north, Nehalem Bay Winery has been open since 1974, one of the state's ten oldest wineries, third-generation family-run, working both sourced Willamette Valley fruit and a line of Oregon fruit wines that lean into what actually grows well this close to the water: berries, not grapes.
The coast's wine story, honestly told, isn't about vineyards: it's about winemakers who moved to the water anyway and figured out how to make it work from somewhere else's fruit. That's a real bet, made twice over five decades, by two wineries still pouring.
The tasting rooms below sit closer to the ocean than any Oregon vineyard actually does. Ask where what's in the glass came from, and expect an answer that starts somewhere inland.
