Van Duzer Corridor AVA wineries and tasting rooms

The Van Duzer Corridor exists because of a gap in the Coast Range that funnels Pacific wind straight into the valley: narrow and nearly unplantable near the coast, wide enough for vineyards by the time it reaches this stretch of Polk and Yamhill counties. Wind-speed data cited in a neighboring AVA's own federal petition put the corridor at roughly 11 to 13 miles per hour on average during the growing season, more than double what nearby Salem or McMinnville see over the same stretch.

Growers here talk about it arriving on a schedule: the marine breeze typically kicks in around 2 p.m. daily, drying out the canopy and cutting fungal disease pressure before evening. In its own federal comment period, 6 of the 18 growers who weighed in specifically cited the wind's effect on grape skins: thicker, more phenolic, slower to ripen than fruit grown just a few miles away. Van Duzer Vineyards, the estate the corridor is unofficially named after, planted its vines between 1982 and 1984, more than three decades before the AVA existed to name it.

The AVA itself only became official in 2019, petitioned by Havlin Vineyard's Jeff Havlin and drawn as a 59,871-acre triangle. Its establishment came in the same federal rulemaking that also fixed a boundary-description error in the neighboring Eola-Amity Hills AVA next door, which is where the persistent idea that Van Duzer was carved out of Eola-Amity comes from. It wasn't; the two are simply neighbors sharing a border and a wind pattern. Johan Vineyards farms 87 of its 175 acres here under Demeter Biodynamic certification, with sheep and chickens doing much of the pest management between rows.

Eighteen vineyards and six wineries work the corridor today, tucked inside the broader Willamette Valley, a small number for a wind this well documented. Look for what the growers below say about skin thickness and hang time; it's usually the clearest way to hear the wind in the wine itself.
