Merlot wineries and tasting rooms in Oregon
Merlot is one of the dominant red grapes in the Applegate Valley, a sub-AVA of the Rogue Valley in southern Oregon, and it also shows up in the Rogue Valley's warmer pockets. It needs more sustained heat than the Willamette Valley provides, which is essentially why you won't find it planted anywhere near Pinot Noir country farther north.
Elevations up to about 2,000 feet keep nights cool even at the height of summer, so Oregon Merlot tends to hold onto more acid and structure than versions from warmer, lower-elevation regions: less plush, more backbone.
It rarely gets top billing on its own here. Most southern Oregon Merlot ends up in Bordeaux-style blends alongside Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc, playing the role of the softer, rounder middle of the wine rather than the whole show.
Look for a single-variety bottling if a winery below makes one: it's a good way to taste what the Applegate Valley's heat and elevation do to a grape that, elsewhere, is often an afterthought.
